Originally the site of a Roman fort, Abergavenny, or Y Fenni in Welsh, is a beautiful market town in Monmouthshire, on the cuff of the Brecon Beacons. The town centre is a vibrant mix of local traders, national chains and great pubs and restaurants. Surrounded by hills and mountains such as Sugar Loaf, Ysgyryd Fawr (Great Skirrid) & Ysgyryd Fach (Little Skirrid) and at the confluence of the Rivers Usk and Gavenny, Abergavenny is a great place to visit for a brisk walk up a mountain and a pint by a fireplace when you get down the other side!
Abergavenny has various busy markets throughout the week, including the Cattle Market which dates back to 1863. Abergavenny also hosts an annual Food Festival in September which attracts in excess of 30,000 visitors to the town.
Abergavenny is a cultural literature hotspot as well, and is mentioned in both Sherlock Holmes & Harry Potter!! As well as books, Abergavenny has a claim to fame in the sports world. Cricket lovers will be well aware of Gary Sobers hitting six sixes in one over, a record that has never been beaten. The unfortunate bowler at the other end? Malcolm Nash from Abergavenny. The ball used was auctioned for £26,400 in 2006!
