Dogs Trust Loughborough welcomes biggest dog ever – and he’s still growing!

Dogs Trust Loughborough has said a huge hello to the biggest dog they have ever welcomed to the centre - and he’s only a pup!

Having celebrated his first birthday in December, Opie, a Saint Bernard, tips the scales at eleven and a half stone and when standing on two paws towers above staff and all the other dogs at the centre, weighing in at 18 times the weight and more than 15 times the height of longer term resident Terrier Cross, Frank.

At the tender age of one it is likely Opie still has some growing to do too so the team are looking for a family with an extra large sofa for the ‘big softie’.

Celine Di Crocco, Manager at Dogs Trust Loughborough, says:

“He took our breath away when we first saw him. Obviously we knew he was going to be big but not this big!

“We have only had one other Saint Bernard here and he is definitely bigger than him so we are certain that despite him being a youngster he’s the biggest dog we’ve ever had the pleasure of finding a home for.”

Nose to tail Opie is five and a half feet tall and his paws are eight inches long! Just hours before he strode through the doors of the Hill Farm rehoming centre Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, had welcomed an eight-month-old Caucasian Shepherd, Fluffy, tipping the scales at 44kg at their Ilfracombe site.

Celine says:

“When we saw Fluffy we never imagined that within just a matter of hours we would be needing to look for extra large blankets and beds for our very own big friendly giant!

“Opie is a big softie, full of fun, and an absolute delight. He is so friendly and just really is a big puppy, who sometimes forgets his size! We’re sure it won’t be long before someone falls for him big time!”

Opie has found himself without a home due to a change in family circumstances and in his new forever home he could live with young adults and potentially another dog and cats. He would welcome a very large sofa to relax on that he’d be happy to share with his new family!
