Strictly Dancing with Dogs!
Meet our amazing Dancing Dog Harley.
Over the weekend the country saw Stacey and Kevin crowned the winners of Strictly Come Dancing 2019.
In celebration of the TV series, here Dogs Trust we held our own special version called ‘Dancing with Dogs.’
Each centre was given the challenge of teaching some signature ‘moves’ to one of our dogs to showcase how beneficial this kind of training can be. Not only does it help build a bond with your dog, but when executed correctly the dog gets so much out of it too by using their brains as well as their bodies for the ultimate enrichment.
On Saturday evening our very own dancing superstar Harley, an 18-month-old Siberian Husky, showed what he can do. As you’ll see from the video below, he absolutely smashed his very special routine which had been devised by Rehabilitation Trainer Kat Wimbles.
Kat tells us:
“Harley, like any Husky, is a super active dog. As well as physical exercise, mental stimulation is so important to help keep him happy. By teaching tricks and fun games not only does it keep his mind busy, but it really helps to strengthen the relationship between us.
Harley is so eager to learn and very clever. We started by working on each individual trick, making sure that we were working in a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle of the centre, and using a Positive Reinforcement training technique. It is really important to make sure you have the full attention of your dog without any distractions, and of course plenty of tasty treats to reward them for their good work. Once we’d mastered the individual tricks I started to ‘chain’ them together and gradually we were able to turn a series of individual tricks into a fabulous routine!
I really hope that this video helps Harley find his perfect Dance Partner!”
