Wetherby is a busy and popular market town in West Yorkshire that has a lot of independent shops as well as multi chains. Despite the recession Wetherby still has a greengrocers, butchers, deli and bakers.

Wetherby has become an acknowledged champion of floral display in Yorkshire, the UK and internationally, having won the best town category of Britain in Bloom in 1998, been awarded a silver gilt in the same competition in 2002 and 2010 and a gold award in the 2005 International communities in bloom

In the days of coach travel, Wetherby was renowned as an important halt, exactly half way between London and Edinburgh on the Great North Road which ran through the centre of the town. The centre of Wetherby is happily now bypassed by the A1(M), but until 1961 all traffic came through the town. In the heyday of the coaching era, Wetherby had up to 40 inns and alehouses. The first recorded mail coach arrived in Wetherby in 1786.
