Are you right for Mike?

Looking for a loyal companion with a gentle soul? Meet Mike, a 3-year-old Foxhound Cross with a sensitive nature and a big heart just waiting to be understood. Life has not been straightforward for this lovely lad—he was a stray with no training or home experience—but with time, trust and the right environment, Mike is now ready to take his first steps into a brighter future. Mike’s ideal home will be calm, quiet, and predictable, with no young children (16+), as he can be nervous and we have no history of him living with children. Minimal visitors, rural or quiet walking areas, and a private garden will all help him feel secure. He must have someone home all the time—he has no experience being left—and we expect his adopters to visit the centre several times to slowly build a bond before he goes home. Most importantly, Mike must live with a confident and steady dog. He finds great comfort in the company of other dogs and thrives when he has a buddy to show him the ropes and help him feel safe. His ideal canine companion will be happy to share their space and show Mike that the world is not such a scary place.

Is Mike right for you?

Mike may be shy to start, but he is a gentle, thoughtful boy who just needs a patient person to believe in him. He has been slowly gaining confidence with his handlers and will now put his head through his harness, though he still needs continued work with handling and wearing it. He is friendly with people he knows if food is involved, and enjoys short sessions of fuss on his terms—he is not the sort of dog to enjoy a big fuss from strangers, but he might choose to sit nearby and share quiet company once he trusts you. He will need further rehab training, and his adopters should be experienced with nervous dogs and prepared to take things at Mike’s pace. No cats or small furries, and he must be kept on lead in public. Mike enjoys gentle enrichment like Kongs (especially since he tends to bolt his food), and benefits from mental stimulation and moderate exercise over big adventures. He is naturally curious, and though the outside world can feel a bit overwhelming to him, with support he is showing he can explore new places—albeit with a tucked tail and cautious steps. He can be startled by loud noises and fast traffic, so peaceful routes are a must. He is still learning what it means to be part of a home, but he has all the potential to blossom in the right environment. Mike might not be your typical outgoing hound, but for someone looking for a quieter companion to grow alongside, he could be your ideal dog. With the right doggy pal and a gentle, patient owner, Mike has every chance to come out of his shell and finally discover what it means to be loved.
