Dogs Trust statement on ear cropping

Some people may not realise that cropped ears are not a natural shape for specific breeds and only exist as a result of ear cropping for cosmetic purposes, which is illegal and banned in England and Wales under section five of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, and in Scotland and Northern Ireland under similar legislation.

Dogs Trust are opposed to this barbaric practice which is purely for aesthetic purposes and not only causes physical pain but may also impact on a dog’s ability to communicate with people and other dogs. Penalties that are currently in place for anyone found to have cropped a dog’s ears include a maximum prison sentence of up five years.

We would like to see the import and sale of dogs with cropped ears or docked tails banned. We would also urge members of the public to never buy from breeders which use this cruel and unnecessary practice and to report any concerns they have about a breeder to Trading Standards.
