Are you right for Cody?

Meet Cody, a handsome German Shepherd who is almost two years old and looking for his forever home. Cody is seeking adopters who are happy to continue his ongoing training and support him as he settles into a new environment. Cody has lived in a home all his life, where he has been housetrained and comfortable being left alone for a few hours at a time. He is crate trained and happy to relax and sleep in his crate. As with any dog, we recommend that any time left alone is built up gradually in his new home, but we believe Cody could happily manage a few hours once settled. He is a lovely, affectionate boy who enjoys spending time with people. Cody loves to play, especially with toys, and balls are definitely his favourite! He would thrive best as the only pet in the home and would benefit from walks in quieter areas. Seeing other dogs while out can be overwhelming for him, and he can become vocal and reactive. Our team at the centre will be on hand to support Cody’s continued training, and it may be helpful for him to learn to feel comfortable wearing a muzzle while he works on his social skills. One of Cody’s favourite activities is playing in water, and he’s full of fun and cheeky mischief. He would love a garden of his own where he can safely play and explore. Cody has previously lived with young children and has been good with them but due to his reactivity we feel he would be best suited to a home with children aged 14 and over. He could however have younger visiting children to his forever home.

Is Cody right for you?

Cody is a wonderful boy with lots of love to give. He's a big lad and can be strong on the lead so would benefit from adopters who feel confident managing him on lead. He aims to please and loves his food, especially extra special treats like chicken! This will come in handy for teaching him all he needs to know. This dog is currently being rehomed under our Homestay scheme. Under this scheme, the dog stays with their current owner until the point of adoption, when ownership transfers briefly to Dogs Trust and then to the new adopters. The benefits of Homestay for a dog are that it minimises disruption and prevents the dog having to come into kennels, however there is the potential the owner may pull out of the scheme prior to adoption. We understand the upset this may cause to potential adopters, and we work closely with owners to minimise the likelihood of this. However, it remains a possibility, and should this occur, Dogs Trust will prioritise finding adopters an alternative suitable dog.

If we’ve found a dog who seems right for you, we’ll invite you to come and meet them at the rehoming centre.

Some of the dogs in our care will need to meet potential owners several times to get to know one another. This lets us see you’re compatible and gives you the chance to build a bond before making a commitment to give them a new home. By taking some time at the beginning to make sure everyone’s comfortable, an adoption is more likely to be successful.

We may also arrange a home visit with you, to see how your house will be set up and check that the garden (if you have one) is secure. This may not be necessary, though, especially if you’ve adopted from us before. Where you already have dogs, we may accept a reference from your vet as an alternative.

If we haven’t found the right match, we’ll continue the search together

If we haven’t found the right dog for you within three months, we’ll let you know your application is closed. We’ll invite you to apply again so we have up-to-date information about you, and we’ll keep looking.

When we’ve matched you with a dog, we’ll help you welcome them to your home. After adoption we’ll keep in touch to see how you and the dog are doing. If you need any advice or support, we’re just a phone call away.
