Barking up the right tree

Dogs Trust Loughborough will once again be relying on volunteers to make sure dogs that themelves without a home this Christmas can still enjoy all the festive fun.

The Rehoming Centre in Loughborough will be looking after around 100 homeless hounds over the holiday period and just two of the volunteers that will be helping make the celebrations go with a swing are Karen and Geoff Coles, a husband and wife team from Anstey in Leicestershire.

Between them the dog-lovers have volunteered for nearly 1,250 hours since they began volunteering in August 2012 and over Christmas and it will be business as usual - almost - walking dogs whatever the weather and cleaning kennels, but then of course helping their four-legged friends open presents, all of which have been donated by generous dog-lovers.

Karen says:

"When I was asked if I could help out I jumped at the chance - I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be! Throughout the year we all work so hard to give the dogs the best possible time whilst they wait for their forever homes and we feel it's especially important to do that over Christmas.

"Whilst the dogs don't know it's Christmas and we can't offer them their own sofa or a roaring fire to relax in front of, we will be making sure they all feel special and don't miss out on any of the fun!"

Dogs Trust Loughborough has around 80 volunteers working alongside staff throughout the year and nationally around 1,500 help out at the charity's 20 Rehoming Centres across the UK.

Rehoming Centre Manager, Celine Di Crocco, says:

"Our volunteers are amazing and in the last few weeks we have been overwhelmed by the number of presents people have brought in for the dogs too. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone that supports us either by giving their time or dropping off donations. We couldn't give the dogs everything they need without all the help we get throughout the year.

"Having seen all the presents that have been dropped off over the last few weeks the staff and volunteers can't wait to help them open them and we can guarantee that they will all be thoroughly enjoyed on Christmas Day and beyond!"
