Finding an alternative

I need temporary care for my dog

If you're escaping from domestic abuse and will be moving to emergency accommodation where they don't accept pets, our Freedom Project may be able to help.

Apart from this, we're not able to provide temporary care for dogs whose owners are moving home or don't have adequate housing, especially as we're a charity with limited resources.

If you live in the area and need your dog to be looked after temporarily because of a crisis, then Mayhew's Pet Refuge scheme may be able to help.

Mayhew Pet Refuge

The Pet Refuge programme provides shelter and care for the pets of people in crisis. This could be due to an owner being hospitalised, going to rehab or needing respite for example.

Freedom

Freedom is our specialist service. We’ve supported thousands of dogs and their owners to find freedom from domestic abuse. If you plan to find safety but are unable to take your dog with you, our confidential dog fostering service may be able to help

This didn't work for me, what's next?

We know this is a tough decision, and we won’t judge you for needing to find your dog a new home. Sometimes, asking us for help is the most responsible thing you can do for your dog.

We will do everything we can but in some circumstances, we won’t be able to take a dog. If that’s the case, we’ll be honest with you about it. We'll always offer advice and help you make alternative arrangements if we can.

If you need to return a dog you've rehomed from us please see our post-adoption support advice for next steps.
