Finding an alternative

I've lost my job and can't afford to keep my dog

Losing your job can put both financial and emotional strain on you and your family. Before making the decision to give up your dog, we know you'll want to ensure that you've explored all of the options available to you for getting help with your finances. Speak to your family and friends who may want to help, and make sure you've explored all the financial assistance available to you through various government schemes.

If you’ve lost your job, that can put a huge strain on your family and prompt a review of all your spending, including pets. But before making any major decisions about what costs to cut to ease the strain, it’s worth checking what benefits you might be eligible for.

This didn't work for me, what's next?

We know this is a tough decision, and we won’t judge you for needing to find your dog a new home. Sometimes, asking us for help is the most responsible thing you can do for your dog.

We will do everything we can but in some circumstances, we won’t be able to take a dog. If that’s the case, we’ll be honest with you about it. We'll always offer advice and help you make alternative arrangements if we can.

If you need to return a dog you've rehomed from us please see our post-adoption support advice for next steps.
