Dogs Trust Shoreham reveals influx of 'toy' dogs
Dogs Trust Shoreham is appealing to local dog lovers to help find a home for a trio of tiny dogs after noticing an influx of ‘toy’ breeds arriving at the rehoming centre in recent months.
The rehoming centre has seen a flurry of Chihuahas, Yorkshire Terriers and Shih Tzu’s arriving through its doors since 2016 began and staff are concerned this trend is likely to continue as the year progresses. Shih Tzu cross Skipper, Yorkshire Terrier Stanley and Miniature Pinscher Missy are just three of the ‘toy’ breeds that have found themselves at Dogs Trust Shoreham in recent months and staff are hoping they will soon get a second chance at happiness in loving homes.
The charity is now urging anyone interested in rehoming a smaller dog to ensure they are committed to caring for a dog for its lifetime before making the decision to bring a dog into their home.
Tracey Rae, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Shoreham explains,
“Stanley, Skipper and Missy are all adorable dogs but it’s important to remember that whilst they may be small, they require just as much care and attention as a large breed. With the trend for designer breeds ever growing and dogs available to buy at the click of a button, we predict that we are likely to see even more toy breeds coming through our doors as 2016 goes on.“
“Whilst we understand that circumstances may change, it’s important for anyone thinking of rehoming a dog to do their research and ensure they understand the commitment that dog ownership brings before bringing a four-legged friend into their home. They may be tiny but they have big hearts and we hope we can soon find lifelong homes for them.”
