Mayor of Greater Manchester adopts Dogs Trust homeless hound
Mr Burnham has adopted one-year-old homeless hound, Axel, from Dogs Trust and he says it’s one of the best things he and his family have ever done.
“My children have wanted a dog for a long time but we knew it wasn’t practical when I was an MP as I was in London so much. However, I had said that if I was ever to be based at home in Manchester for my work, then we would consider it. So of course as soon as I was elected Mayor, they didn’t waste any time reminding me what I’d said!”
After doing their research and chatting to Dogs Trust’s expert rehoming team about finding a dog that was happy to live with a cat, the family were introduced to Poodle-Cross, Axel.
“We were so excited to meet him. We needed a dog that could fit in with a busy family life and that was independent enough to be left on their own every now and then too, and Axel was absolutely perfect.
“We all loved him straight away and he has become a huge part of the family. He makes us laugh all the time and he is a joy to come home to.
“Dogs Trust looks after thousands of dogs every year who very often, like Axel, through no fault of their own find themselves homeless. This could be due to anything from a relationship breakdown to financial reasons, and we feel privileged to have been able to adopt Axel.
“A dog is definitely for life and not just for Christmas and we’re looking forward to years of happy family times with him.”
Dawn Bishop, Dogs Trust Manchester Rehoming Centre Manager, says:
“We are delighted that Andy chose to adopt and give Axel a wonderful forever home. He is a gorgeous dog and has obviously fitted into family life very well!”
