From Game of Thrones to Game of Homes
As fans prepare to mourn the passing of the much-anticipated final season of Game of Thrones, Dogs Trust Kenilworth is hoping the finale of the fantasy drama will mean fewer wolf look-a-like breeds being handed over to the rehoming centre.
Since the series first hit screens the charity has seen a huge increase in the number of ‘wolf look-a-likes’ finding themselves in need of new homes.
In 2010, a year before the first series aired, just 79 Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskies and Akitas were cared for by Dogs Trust, compared to 411 last year – a 420% increase. In comparison, the number of other large breeds finding themselves without a forever home such as Rottweilers, German Shepherds and Weimaraners has fallen by 22%.
Dogs Trust Kenilworth is currently looking for a home for two Akitas, Shadow and Theo and two Siberian Huskies Pearl and Scarlet.
Emma Healey, Manager at Dogs Trust Kenilworth, said:
“Since the start of Game of Thrones we have seen a huge increase in the popularity of wolf look-a-like dogs.
“They are beautiful, large, powerful dogs and they make loyal companions but as they were originally bred for more physical past-times, such as pulling sledges in cold climates and hunting, they need a lot of physical and mental stimulation every day and not all owners are able to provide that.
“Owners have done the right thing bringing their dog to us if they can no longer look after them. We love looking after our wolf-like breeds but of course what we really want is for them to find their forever homes.”
Shadow, Theo, Pearl and Scarlet are all looking for different home environments, but they are looking for owners who understand the demands of this breed and are in a position to offer a life-long commitment.
“Our staff have a great bond with our wolf look-a-likes but we would them all to find their ideal homes soon. They may be cute but they are powerful, large dogs who need regular exercise and socialisation so it is important that we find owners who can provide them with everything they need.”
If you think either Shadow, Theo, Pearl and Scarlet could be the dog you would like to welcome into your life, please call Dogs Trust Kenilworth on 01926 569236.
