Every dog has its day at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe

Tails are wagging at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe as they celebrate three of their long-term lodgers finding their forever homes during the same month.

A ‘furry-tail’ ending seemed a long way off for Jumbo, Fudge and Clarence who notched up nearly 2,000 days being cared for by staff at the West Down-based rehoming centre. But thanks to the hard work of the canine carers and behaviour team who went the extra mile for the homeless hounds, they have all now happily headed off to the forever homes of their dreams.

To make their time at the Rehoming Centre extra special the dedicated team went above and beyond to give them lots of different experiences to boost their appeal to potential adopters – even treating them to reading time in the kennels to help them relax, crashing out on the sofa in front of the TV in the real life room, sleepovers at staff homes and taking them for offsite walks for a change of scenery.

The dogs are now all settled in their forever homes and whilst they are missed by everyone at the Rehoming Centre, staff couldn’t be happier that they have all landed on their paws with their new families.

Four-year-old Collie cross Jumbo was a resident for two years when he was rehomed by Kimberley Eastaugh and Richard Daniels from Somerset. Kimberley said:

“We’re so excited to have Jumbo in our family – he has definitely found his forever home with us. We fell in love with him the first time we saw him and after chatting to the staff and meeting him several more times, we were pleased to be able to finally bring him home. He’s settled in so well and I'm so proud of how he's doing. We love that he’s so clever and his character is coming out more and more each day. We know he was on a bespoke training plan at Dogs Trust and his behaviour and progress is testament to the hard work his carers put into him. He’s doing so well and he really has been the best thing to happen to us.”

Elise Watson, Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe, says:

“Finding the perfect home for any dog always fills you with a warm feeling. But when some of your longest term dogs find their fortune it really is a special day for everyone. The staff ensure that all of the dogs in our care get lots of playtime, TLC, and focused training sessions, but the team really have gone the extra mile for these three as they desperately wanted them to find a loving home.”

Dogs Trust Ilfracombe has been able to go the extra mile for longer term residents like this fantastic four thanks to players of the People’s Postcode Lottery who help to fund dedicated expert staff who are on hand to care for the dogs of all shapes, sizes and ages until they find new homes.

Elise added:

“However long a dog is with us, whether it’s a week or two or several years, we work with them, focusing on whatever will help them find their perfect home and when that pays off it’s an incredible feeling. And thanks to the support we get from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, we’re able to give dogs the special care and training they deserve.

“These dogs needed quite specific homes to suit their needs so thankfully, lots of experienced dog owners came forward to give them a second chance – it was like a domino effect; once one went home, the rest followed. It really has been a fantastic month and whilst we’ll miss them, everyone is over the moon that they have found the happy endings they deserve.”
