Rowland's happy ever after

After over 1000 days in the care of Dogs Trust, 4 year old Greyhound Rowland, has landed on all three paws finding his forever home. He’s had quite a journey with some bumps along the way, but we are so pleased for Rowland to be starting his next adventure.

From first being brought into us as a stray at just 6 months old, it was apparent that he was suffering from an injury. Investigations and x-rays showed a fracture in the left hind leg which needed the bones to be re-aligned using external fixators. This meant the metal plates were fixed to the outside of the leg making them visible which made for quite an unusual sight. Rowland had plenty of respite care in a foster home until a permanent pet free residence could be found. He then joined us back at the centre as his leg didn’t quite heal the way we had hoped. Discussions within the Veterinary team decided the best option would be to remove the leg. He then became one the tallest ‘tripod dogs’ we’ve ever had.

Due to Rowlands strict recovery regime, he missed opportunities for learning experiences of how to be around other dogs. To aid his profile for rehoming we shone the spotlight on him and increased his media publicity. The superstar featured in numerous press releases, blogs and became a regular face over our social accounts. Meanwhile the training team were working hard to support Rowland in some social doggy etiquette. It took a bit of time, but Rowland mastered the class of ‘making friends’. With his training progressing we could open up his rehoming requirements to include a dog household family.

A short while after, Sara and Tim, were browsing the website and saw Rowland. Sara told us:

“I was looking at the website as I sometimes do! I had no intention of rehoming another dog at the time as we already have 3! I saw Rowland and just thought I will just watch the video and that was it, firstly he has 3 legs, secondly he had a happy face with kind eyes and the main factor was, how can such a beautiful dog have lived in the dogs' homes for the majority of his life. It broke my heart, I had to have him.”

After multiple successful introductions a going home date was set in place, just after he celebrated his 4th birthday.

Take a look at how Rowland spent his last morning with us!

Rowland is truly deserving his happy ever after and we wish him and his family all the best.
