How brave Lurcher Gus found his forever home
Gus’s foster family gave him the support he needed to thrive and find his forever home.
Gus arrived at our Evesham centre on 11 April 2025, after being found as a stray. Although he was initially thought to be around one year old, further assessment by the vet team revealed that the Lurcher was closer to six years old.
Life in kennels was overwhelming for poor Gus, who found being around other dogs difficult and needed extra support to help him feel settled. Our team put tailored training plans in place and worked to build his confidence, while vet checks also discovered pain in his legs and recurring problems with his eyes.
Although Gus made great progress, he needed a break from kennel life and a chance to experience home comforts. In September 2025, dedicated volunteer foster carers Howard and Meg welcomed him into their home, and it wasn’t long until they fell in love with him.

Unfortunately for Gus, his journey was far from over. After continued problems with his eyes, including one of them rupturing, it was decided that removing both eyes would give him the best quality of life. Thanks to the commitment of Howard and Meg, Gus was able to remain in the home he knew and trusted while adapting to life without sight.
Despite further setbacks, including treatment for a jaw condition, Gus continued to take everything in his stride. Finally, after receiving the all-clear from the veterinary team, he was officially adopted by Howard and Meg on 9 June 2026.
Staff celebrated the special occasion with dog-friendly cake, balloons, banners, and all of Gus's favourite people, marking the end of a difficult chapter and the beginning of his new life with the people who were there for him during the toughest moments.
Rehoming centre manager Chris Slight reflected on Gus’s journey: “Gus's story is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when patience, compassion and teamwork come together. Everyone involved in his care was determined to give him the very best chance, and seeing him finally head home with Howard and Meg was incredibly special. We couldn't be happier for him."
From the moment Gus came to stay with us, we knew he was something special. He's faced more than his fair share of challenges, but he's tackled everything with such resilience and has brought so much joy to our lives. We couldn't imagine life without him and are so proud to officially call him part of the family.

Now he is fully settled into his forever home, Gus is thriving with Howard and Meg by his side. Having already built a strong bond with his adopters before making things official, he has been able to enjoy a smooth transition into family life. These days, Gus spends his time enjoying home comforts, relaxing with his favourite people and embracing each day.
