Volunteer Enrichment and Welfare Assistant

Canine carer putting dog kibble into a green puzzle feeder bowl

These volunteers carry out a variety of activities that enrich the lives of the dogs in our care, adapting these activities to each individual dog’s needs. They could be making snuffle mats one day and bedding the dogs down the next, by reading to them their favourite story!

What will you be doing?

Responsibilities will vary according to the needs of the dogs in the centre, but some examples include:

  • making up destruction boxes or puzzle toys and feeders such as Kongs
  • cleaning of toys and dog items with disinfectant
  • looking after the areas where treats are kept, keeping them topped up, getting rid of expired items and keeping them tidy and organised
  • topping up treat supplies in our kitchens
  • topping up enrichment items and toys in all relevant areas of the rehoming centre
  • socialisation time with puppies (where possible)
  • cleaning and maintenance of outdoor enrichment areas such as the Scent Garden or food areas where treats are prepared
  • reading to dogs from outside kennels to provide company.

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • passionate about dogs and improving their welfare, through activities
  • patient and understanding, particularly with dogs who may experience behaviour or medical difficulties
  • conscientious with a can-do attitude
  • excellent organisational skills.

What this role will offer you:

You’ll be joining a supportive and passionate team of like-minded individuals who will answer your questions and help you train for the role. There’s the opportunity to develop your current skills, and gain new ones. We will provide a Dogs Trust volunteer uniform, and will recognise the work you are kindly undertaking by enrolling you in our Volunteer Merits Scheme. Best of all, you can make a positive impact on the lives of dogs and families in your community!
