Hitting incredible heights to raise money

At Leeds we are thrilled to receive a visit from local suPAWter Simon Wilkes, who recently climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for our charity.

Freshly returned from his big African adventure, Simon called into our Leeds rehoming centre with his wife Kim to take a look behind the scenes and get a better idea of where the funds will be going.

During the visit he was able to chat with Supporter Relations Officer Sean Daly who guided them around the centre, explaining along the way all the different ways in which we help and support dogs in need.

They got to meet an adorable pair of OAP’s (Old Aged Pooches!) called Lucy and Mally. The Springer Spaniel and Collie Cross pair are 8 and 10 years old and recently arrived at the rehoming centre when their owner was sadly no longer able to look after them.

When asked about the incredible feat of scaling the worlds highest free-standing mountain, Simon told us:

“What an adventure the 6 days in Kilimanjaro National Park has been. The 12 hour round summit was extremely mentally and physically challenging with the altitude reaching over 19,300ft and temperatures as low as -15c.  We set off from base camp (where my resting heart rate was just over 100bmp) at midnight and reached the roof of Africa just after sunrise. I and three other teammates have raised a staggering £8k for Dogs Trust, British Heart Foundation and Wakefield Street Kitchen. Thank you to all who have shown your support. Following the adventure, my first thoughts were a shower, proper toilet and most importantly, a beer!”

As is the custom, Simon left a Dogs Trust sticker at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Through sponsorship, Simon has raised well over £3k for Dogs Trust which will really help the team continue to care for dogs like Lucy and Mally for as long as it takes to find their forever homes.

Our Supporter Relations Officer Sean Daly said:

“What Simon has done is incredible! It was a pleasure to give him the tour of Dogs Trust Leeds. The fact that he has climbed a mountain to raise money for us is brilliant and from all the staff and dogs we’d like to say thank you.”
