How you’re helping us end puppy smuggling
After a decade of delay, we’re one step closer to ending puppy smuggling for good.

The cruel puppy smuggling trade has gone unchecked for too long. For ten years, we’ve been campaigning to change the law and protect innocent dogs. Thanks to your support, we’re almost there.
Right now, it’s too easy for dogs and puppies to be transported into the UK in horrifying conditions. Often, these journeys leave them with long-term issues, both physical and behavioural. But there are very few consequences for puppy smugglers, even if they do get caught.
For a decade, we've been calling on the Government to close loopholes in the law that are abused by puppy smugglers. We want them to:
- Increase the age puppies can be imported to 6 months
- Ban the non-commercial transport of heavily pregnant dogs
- Ban the commercial movement of pregnant dogs into Great Britain
- Ban the importation and sale of dogs with cropped ears and docked tails
- Bring in tougher penalties for those caught illegally importing dogs.
With your help, we've shown the Government that this issue is close to the hearts of many of us across the country. Last year, over 17,000 of you wrote to your local MP to demand that the Government finally crack down on puppy smuggling.
17,000 of you
emailed your MP and demanded change.
What's the latest news?
Thanks to your support, the Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats, and Ferrets) Bill is in the final stages of its journey to become law. The Bill, put forward by vet and MP Danny Chambers, will face one more vote by MPs in the House of Commons on 4 July. If it’s voted through, it will go to the House of Lords and be one step closer to becoming law.
This is a major milestone and a huge step forward in our fight against puppy smuggling.
