Are you right for Dakota?

Dakota is a 5-year-old German Shepherd looking for a calm and understanding home where he can continue building his confidence. He’s an affectionate, people-oriented boy who loves being close to his humans and enjoys plenty of fuss and attention once he’s settled. Dakota has been through a lot before coming into our care and has made fantastic progress, but he will still need patient adopters who can support him as he adjusts to home life, for example building up time alone, getting into a car. However, he does travel well. Around the home, Dakota is housetrained and settles well overnight. Dakota is very food motivated and enjoys engaging with his handlers through training and enrichment. During such time he will occasionally explore the World around him with his mouth. He enjoys short sniffy walks, gentle play such as tug games, and exploring the world around him. He can become a little over-excited at times, particularly in busy environments or around other dogs, so he will benefit from calm guidance and ongoing positive training to help him settle and make good choices. Dakota can also be a little unsure with some handling and veterinary procedures, so adopters will need to continue building his confidence with these gradually and positively. Dakota would prefer to be the only pet in his new home for now. While he can walk nicely alongside calm dogs, he can find busy dog-populated areas overwhelming at times and would suit a quieter environment where he can continue building confidence at his own pace. He is suitable for homes with older teenagers aged 16+. Dakota is currently recovering from ongoing skin and ear issues and will need adopters who are happy to continue supporting his care and recovery. His exercise will need to remain gentle initially while he gradually rebuilds his strength and stamina.

Is Dakota right for you?

Dakota is a loyal and affectionate boy who forms strong bonds with the people caring for him. He loves company, enjoys learning, and thrives with calm guidance and consistency. He would suit adopters who have experience with larger breeds or dogs who can become over-aroused and who are willing to continue his training in a positive and patient way. Dakota will need a quieter home environment where he can settle at his own pace and continue building confidence with new experiences. He responds well to routine and enjoys having a comfortable space to relax after his walks and enrichment sessions. With understanding adopters who can provide structure, ongoing support, and plenty of reassurance, Dakota has so much potential to flourish into a wonderful companion. If you’re looking for a clever, affectionate dog and are prepared to continue supporting his journey, Dakota could make a fantastic addition to the right home.
