As temperatures drop and nights grow longer, we see a sharp increase in the number of stray and abandoned dogs left to fend for themselves. With fewer people around to spot a dog in danger, the cold puts already vulnerable dogs at even greater risk.

Dora the Staffy receives medical attention after being rescued by Dogs Trust

Dora was found just after Christmas, wandering alone in the cold. She was dangerously underweight, her tail was broken and her skin was infected. No one knows how long she had been fending for herself, but every hour alone was putting her life at risk.

When Dora arrived in our care, she had finally reached safety. She received immediate veterinary care, gentle handling, warmth and regular small meals to rebuild her strength. Slowly Dora began to recover. The pain eased, she wagged her tail and her eyes brightened with trust again.

Juno

Juno, a 4-year-old Terrier, was abandoned in a busy supermarket car park. It was loud, frightening and completely unfamiliar to him. He had no food, water or shelter. Every night alone was a risk to his life.

When Juno arrived in our care, he was terrified. With warmth, patience and a quiet space to rest, he slowly began to relax and trust again.

Bagel the Golden Retriever was abandoned before Christmas

Bagel

Bagel, a Golden Retriever, was discovered in a ditch beside a road with two other dogs, all wearing harmful chock collars. Frozen in fear, he was full of mistrust and in real danger as cars sped past.

Bagel was also overweight, which put pressure on his joints and showed how neglected he had been. With gentle care, veterinary treatment and time to rest, Bagel began to feel safe again. 

More dogs like Bagel are abandoned after Christmas than at any other time of year.
