Magical Mabel: truly worth the wait

Welcoming a puppy into the home is the stuff of childhood dreams. Who could forget the excitement of meeting their four-legged best friend, from the tentative first sniff to gaining their trust, and watching them grow in character and confidence (and size!) with every passing day.

This magical moment was caught on camera by mum of three Leanne, who captured her children counting down the seconds for their puppy, Mabel, to arrive at her forever home.

Adopting Mabel with virtual rehoming

After lots of discussion, the Mitchells decided that adopting a rescue pooch was the best idea for them. The family started making applications on our website and after several months they spotted Mabel. We receive thousands of rehoming applications,  and puppies always get a huge amount of interest, so the Mitchell’s applied as quickly as they could. Our rehoming centre looked through every single one of Mabel’s applications on a first come, first served basis, before getting in touch with the Mitchells as a potential match.

During the virtual rehoming process, Leanne told our team all about her family, and was put at ease by our staff whose knowledge of Mabel’s personality reassured her that they would be a great fit. Due to public health guidelines, our team did all the checks virtually and asked Leanne to send a video of her home set up to make sure it would suit Mabel’s needs. Having agreed together that they could give Mabel her ideal forever home, the centre arranged a time for the family to pick her up.

Settling happily into her forever home

From application to post adoption support, Leanne felt reassured knowing that Dogs Trust “were a phone call away at any time.” As well as receiving a lifetime of post-adoption behaviour support, all pooches adopted from our centres go home with a month’s food from Pets at Home, four weeks’ Pet Plan insurance, and an invitation to Dog School, to help give all our dogs the best start in their new lives.

Mabel has settled into family life and is adored by everyone. Leanne’s eldest son is already practicing responsible dog ownership and helps clean up after her on walks. Now she’s bigger, the Mitchell’s favourite thing about their fluffiest family member is her ears, which are very expressive. We think you’ll agree, she’s gorgeous!

Making pawfect matches

At Dogs Trust, everything we do is done with our pooches’ best interests at heart, and this is never truer than with rehoming. We go to huge lengths to make sure that our dogs (and supporters!) meet their perfect pairing, which is why it can take a bit of time and several applications to find a match. As in Mabel’s story, if you’re ready to welcome a dog into your home, it’s always worth the wait to find your special someone and to change the tale for a rescue dog!
