Being homeless or in housing crisis is an extremely difficult and unstable time. For a lot of people being able to stay with their pet is very important. Dogs Trust feels that where possible temporary housing providers (both voluntary and statutory) should acknowledge the importance of the bond which often exists between a homeless person and their dog and adopt a dog-friendly policy.
Dogs Trust Hope Project has produced the Welcoming Dogs booklet below as a source of information for homeless organisations who accept or are thinking about accepting clients with dogs. It is based on the advice and experiences of organisations who already allow dogs into their projects. The booklet explains the benefits of accepting dogs and offers advice on health and safety, insurance, hygiene and behaviour.
Many hostels, shelters and day centres have already found the Welcoming Dogs booklet invaluable. As a result of our work in this area, many more homeless people are now able to access essential services and take their first step towards independence and a more settled life with their pet.
For organisations that require further help or advice, we can arrange for an experienced member of staff to visit your project. We can work through any issues you may have, including hygiene and behaviour, insurance, and health and safety. To book an appointment please call us or email us at hopeproject@dogstrust.org.uk

Dog-friendly Homelessness Organisations

“Dogs Trust is very aware that people in crisis as a result of homelessness or other domestic upheaval regard their relationship with their animals as a crucial element of stability in their lives. We are determined that the health of their dogs should not be affected because of their unusual circumstances.”
Chris Laurence, Dogs Trust Veterinary Director
