Stray dog survey 2006

The Stray Dog Survey is carried out annually by Dogs Trust and NOP, to ask all UK Local Authorities about the numbers of dogs coming into council-run kennels & what proportion are reclaimed, rehomed or put to sleep.

The findings from this survey led to the neutering and microchipping campaign being set up in the North East in 1999, as this region had the most acute problems with stray dogs.

Over the years we have seen a significant reduction in the numbers of stray dogs coming into council pounds and in return, a drop in the number of dogs being needlessly destroyed.
