About us

We’re the dog charity. For almost 150 years, we’ve been helping dogs lead happier, healthier lives.

A better life for every dog

Our mission is simple: to be there for dogs when and where they need us most

Today, more dogs and owners need a helping hand (or paw) than ever before. That’s why we do all we can to support every dog, and every owner, through thick and thin, throughout their lives.

Whether it’s helping owners through tough times, caring for dogs in our rehoming centres, supporting communities with expert advice, or improving dog welfare globally, we’re here to help. Because every dog deserves safety and love.

What we stand for

Everything we do starts with our vision: a better life for every dog.

We’re committed to being there for dogs and the people who love them through every stage of life — preventing problems before they grow, providing expert care when it’s needed most, and speaking up for dogs everywhere.

Our love of dogs means we want the very best for all of them. Because when they (and their people) are supported properly, the world’s a better place for everyone.

Who we are

We were founded in 1891 by Lady Gertrude Stock and a small group of devoted dog lovers determined to improve life for dogs.

While a lot has changed over the years, one thing hasn’t: the unwavering commitment of our people. Thanks to their passion, we have grown from humble beginnings to be the UK’s leading dog welfare charity, with 22 rehoming centres across the UK and Ireland, and programmes and partnerships throughout the world.

Wherever we are, we work with compassion, curiosity and a clear sense of purpose to improve dogs’ lives. Discover more about who we are.

What we do

From behavioural support to rehoming and international welfare, our work helps dogs at every stage of their lives, around the corner and around the world.

Helping dogs and owners live better together

Life with a dog can be wonderful — but it can also be tricky sometimes. We offer practical solutions and support to help owners and dogs stay together wherever possible.

Helping dogs find their forever homes

When dogs need a fresh start, we provide expert care and specialist support, giving them the best chance to find a loving home where they can thrive.

Creating a better world for dogs
