– following today’s independent review into the Greyhound Industry by Lord Donoughue
Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare organisation, welcomes recommendations from today’s report by Lord Donoughue regarding regulatory changes to the greyhound industry.
“The creation of a single entity to govern the Greyhound Industry will clarify the current industry structure, by combining the strengths of both the NGRC and the BGRB.” Comments Clarissa Baldwin Dogs Trust CEO, Chairman of Greyhound Forum and external assessor for the review.
“The racing greyhound has had a raw deal for too long and these changes could not come sooner for this majestic dog. A number of points have been raised that will vastly improve the lives of thousands of greyhounds should this report be accepted by the industry, implemented and enforced.”
Dogs Trust believes that the findings and recommendations in the Donoughue report are fundamental to the ongoing improvement of the industry itself. Proposals such as ‘registration from the time of earmarking’ will not only play a huge part in the integrity of the sport but should provide real time figures of dogs involved in racing, enabling transparency and traceability through out the dogs’ life. This should lead to a professionally regulated industry, responsible owners and protection for the animals from unnecessary destruction due to industry wastage.
The report has established some key industry recommendations which Dogs Trust urges the UK Greyhound Industry to sit up listen to and implement without delay.
