As long as you’ve laid the correct groundwork your adult dog should be a wonderful, stable, sociable, happy, healthy companion. Of course, every dog is naughty, plain cheeky or has the odd accident occasionally but as long as your dog is getting enough exercise and things to do to keep him out of mischief, this should be the exception rather than the rule.
If you are adopting an adult dog then things may be slightly different. Unfortunately not everyone is a responsible dog owner and depending on the way your dog has been treated by his previous carers, he may be more of a challenge. Of course, not every rehomed dog has a shady past and he may be an absolute joy and trouble-free from the start, however you should be prepared for mishaps and perhaps treat him as a puppy with regards to training, housetraining and socialisation until you know what stage he is at. Remember that there is help available and the pleasure you’ll get from seeing your dog turn into your perfect partner will make all of the effort and work worthwhile.
