What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid allows charities to reclaim some of the tax their supporters have paid to the government. Using Gift Aid means that for every £1 you donate, Dogs Trust will receive an extra 28p from the Inland Revenue. There are no complicated forms to fill out - you just have to declare that you're a taxpayer and we will do the rest.
A £10 donation from you with Gift Aid is worth £12.80 to Dogs Trust, and yet £10 is all you will pay!
How can I sign up to Gift Aid?
You can set up Gift Aid online simply by registering on this website (in the top right-hand corner) and ticking the Gift Aid checkbox.
In order to claim Gift Aid we must have your name, including your first name or initials, and your full address including postcode. Please check your details are correct. Once registered for Gift Aid, we can claim 28% of ALL the donations you have made to Dogs Trust in the last 6 years and all future donations until you cancel your declaration.
I am a pensioner, can I still Gift Aid my donations?
As long as you have paid enough tax during the year to cover your donations, i.e. 28% of the value of your gift, you can Gift Aid your donations. As a pensioner you may still pay tax on a private pension plan or savings account, or you may pay capital gains tax if you sell property or shares.
Our donations are made from a joint bank account, can we still Gift Aid?
Yes, providing at least one person named on the account pays tax and completes the Gift Aid declaration.
I am a low rate tax payer, can I still Gift Aid my donations?
Yes, if you pay a lower rate tax (10% or 20%) Dogs Trust can still claim back 28p for each £1 you donation provided you have paid enough tax in the year to cover the Gift Aid claimed on your gift i.e. 28% of the value of your gift.
Is Gift Aid affected if I am a higher rate tax payer?
Dogs Trust can only claim at the basic rate, but as a higher rate tax payer you can reclaim the additional tax on your donations yourself. All you have to do is include your charitable gifts on your tax self assessment form to claim the additional 18%.
What if I have already agreed to Gift Aid to another charity?
You can support as many UK charities as you like through Gift Aid. Each charity you support will need a Gift Aid declaration and you will have to pay enough tax to cover 28% of your total donations.
