There are two varieties of Welsh Corgi; the Cardigan and the Pembroke. Both are small sized, sturdy little dogs, set low to the ground with a fox-like brush for a tail, and their head is fox-like also, with the ears tending to be larger on the Cardigan. Their straight, medium or short length coat is waterproof. Records have been discovered that states that the Cardigan Welsh Corgi has existed in the UK since about 1200 BC. They are thought to have been brought to Wales by the Celts. They were very popular as cattle drovers. According to records, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi has existed in the UK since a least 920 AD. They are thought to have been brought to Wales by the Flemish weavers. They were very popular in the 14th to the 18th centuries as cattle drovers. The Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis were recognised as separate breeds in the UK in 1934. Both Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis are intelligent dogs that love a challenge. They are not too difficult to train but they can try to be dominant if given the chance. As puppies they do require to be properly socialised and trained. (PetPlanet)
