Outdoor Kennels

Dogs Trust generally advocates your dog living with you in a home environment as a family pet.

However we accept the use of outdoor kennels for some dogs; in these cases the keeper must at minimum ensure the dog has access to water and that the kennel has adequate bedding and is waterproof.  The kennel should be insulated to keep it warm in winter and cool in summer and be able to be ventilated.  There must be enough light to enable proper cleaning.  There should also be an attached escape proof run to allow the dog to get out if it wishes to do so.

If you wish to build your own or buy an outdoor kennel provisions should be made to ensure the safety and comfort of your dog.  You should also ensure that you have the relevant planning consent, if needed, prior to any build.  Your Local Authority will be able to offer guidance which could save you both time and money.
