Health Problems

There are many diseases that can affect dogs. If a dog shows any of the following signs it is likely to be ill and should be taken to see a vet:

  • Off colour
  • Not eating
  • Not drinking
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
  • Coughing or difficulty breathing
  • Discharge from ears, nose or eyes
  • Excessive scratching
  • Limping

This list is not exhaustive but if you think your dog is ill the Animal Welfare Act - Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act in Scotland - says you have to have him treated.

It is as important to take preventive measures to keep your dog healthy as some diseases can be prevented relatively easily. You will need the advice of a vet so you should register your dog with one as soon as you get him. It is probably best to take him to have a health check within 24 or 48 hours of getting him as not all people who sell dogs ensure that they are healthy.
