Friends and family: leaving your dog in the care of others

One of the most popular options for alternative care while you're away without your dog is putting him in the care of friends and / or family.

Your dog will probably be happiest if he is left with someone that he already knows and likes. This is of course, also the cheapest option.

  • Remember to leave the details of your vet and the telephone number of where you will be staying in case of emergency.
  • Make sure that whoever you are leaving your dog with is aware of the responsibilities and legal obligations of having a dog in their care. They must keep the dog under control at all times whilst in public and be sure to ‘scoop that poop’!
  • If they are caring for the dog in their own home, then you will need to attach a temporary tag with their address and phone number, just in case your dog escapes.
  • If your dog is microchipped, contact the microchip register to let them know of the temporary change of contact details.
  • Write detailed instructions for feeding (amounts and times) and walking etc. to help your dog’s carer to keep his routine as close to normal as possible.
  • Remember to leave your dog’s bed (preferably unwashed) and favourite toys with his carer, so that he has something that smells familiar and comforting to him.
