Freedom Project: What happens to my dog?

To access our service, you will need to fill out a dog information form and a legal contract, which will be sent out to you. We will also need confirmation that you are fleeing from domestic violence. Once these forms have been returned to us, we are able to start looking for a foster carer for your dog.

We will then arrange to pick up your pets and they will be placed with an experienced foster carer in their own home. Your pets will be reunited with you as soon as you are in a position to have them back.

You should consider the following important points when looking to access this service:

  • We will provide all pet food and veterinary treatment required during the foster period free of charge
  • Pets coming onto the project must be neutered. If your pet is not already neutered we will arrange to have this done during the foster placement at no cost to you
  • If your dog has ever shown aggression towards people we will be unable to place him with a foster family
  • We are unable to foster dogs under 7 months of age
  • You will be unable to visit your pet whilst in foster care but we will regularly send you pictures and updates.

“Knowing that my dog was being cared for by Dogs Trust Freedom Project has made things a lot easier for me and my children. It has been a really stressful time for us, but being able to leave my violent partner and knowing my pet will be safe and cared for was a huge relief.”
