First Aid: If your dog is involved in a road accident

In the event of a dog being involved in a road accident, it is important to prevent deterioration of the situation by ensuring you and the dog are safe from any further traffic. It is advisable to seek veterinary attention as the visible injuries are not always the whole story in these accidents.

Remember that the dog will be in shock and possibly in pain, so careful handling should be used to prevent further injury or harm to you or the dog

If the dog is bleeding then you should control this (follow the link to find out more). Keep the dog warm and calm to help with shock and contact your veterinary surgeon for advice regarding any specific injuries before transporting the dog if possible.

PLEASE NOTE: The advice given on this page is general. Always phone your veterinary clinic for specific advice in an emergency.
